Typography Porn, the Work of David Smith
March 11th, 2013 [ Tags: david smith, john mayer, reverse glass, sign, typography ]Though I recognize his talent as a guitar player, I’m not much of a fan of John Mayer’s recorded work. However, I would purchase a vinyl copy of his latest album Born and Raised for the cover alone. It’s absolutely stunning. Danny Cooke’s short documentary of David Smith’s process for creating the cover is totally captivating. The pencil illustrations are so meticulously detailed that I could stare at them for hours and find new details in every viewing. The final piece is that much more impressive. And that’s all before I got to the part where Smith creates glass panels from bits of the cover.
Typography nerds absolutely MUST check out Smith’s site. He chronicles his process for various pieces with gorgeous photos. He also sells some of his digital scroll work taken directly from some of his commissions. Man, I could spend hours just getting lost in his scrolls. I believe he also teaches workshops so if you’re anywhere near Torquay in the UK, get your ass over to his studio.
You can purchase calendars, posers, and prints of the Born and Raised cover if you don’t want to listen to John Mayer music. I think I’m going to have to get one of those sets.
