Sweet Lil’ Thing

Hey look! It’s a guest strip! And it’s in continuity!

Not really. I mean, it is in continuity, but it’s not a guest strip. I didn’t quite have the time to do a comic for Monday last week when I was gearing up for ConnectiCon and I didn’t have the room to pack all my comicking gear. So I did this one panel continuation of the scene from Friday and thought it’d be fun to color it up when I got home. This is what ¥P could look like if I had the time to color every strip. Likey? No likey?

I am dead tired and amazed I’m still awake typing right now. I will do a nice vlog review of the con as soon as my voice recovers. Long story short, I had an amazingly rad time and would be honored to return next year if ConnectiCon so wishes. Thanks to everyone who came out to visit and say hey.

And now, time to hit the pillow with my head.

  • Kyle Wright

Okay…1 WOW. 2 I like the color page…but I don’t know if I would like this comic regularly in color. I think you are amazingly talented at color, I just think this type of comic works with the black and white. I think the occasional bonus page in color is workable, just not too much. Maybe that’s just me.

  • http://cocktailchem.blogspot.com JordanDevereaux

I think there’s a sort of austere charm to YP being B&W. Definitely works. And if it makes getting the comic out a little bit easier, I’m all for that as well. Plus the books will be a little bit cheaper.

  • Jordan

I think the color work here is absolutely gorgeous, and certainly wouldn’t be opposed to a switch to full color at the start of a future storyline. That said, the black and white does work really well, especially with the effort you always put into the shading and details.

  • Eric Metz

I love your coloring and I think the comic would look amazing if you had the time to do it in color every time. I do understand that you don’t have the time and the black and white works for you so don’t feel pressured to switch.
    (compliments compliments compliments)

  • Doc

I echo the sentiments here. The coloring is AMAZING, and the overall comp is freakin’ gorgeous.

I do, however, think that sticking with the black and white is quite charming, and it’s actually a nice break from the rest of the colorful eye-raping that is the Interwebs.

A once-in-a-while/regular thing where you color a single comic would be quite nice, especially if it was at this level. You could even think of it as a little homage to the great Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes. Granted, it was newspaper print, but as I read through my Complete Calvin and Hobbes Collection (you know, the 3-book, SUPER heavy-duty collection?), I find the Sunday color comics a refreshing break and a nice treat.

  • ChrisKeris

Wow. Just wow. You have proven time and time again to be amazing at drawing, but this? Holy cow

  • Jesuisunbaer

me likey, but I don’t want you to kill yourself trying to color all the time, maybe a color one everyone in awhile or when it would addto the scene. like keep everything else black and white, but highlight certain things in color.

  • geri_chan

Wow, this is gorgeous! I think it would be awesome if you could do the strip in color on a regular basis, but I suspect that might be too time-consuming. In that case, it would still be great if you did the occasional bonus color page, maybe for special occasions or to highlight an important scene.

  • Q-Rai

    OMG likey. Definitely likey! <3
(Also, I love your comic – though I'd add that as a first-time commenter.)

  • http://www.facebook.com/egor.yureskul Egor Yureskul

Likey, but teh BW version is way more styish.
I wish you could do a colored strip/filler once in a while.

  • Aerinx

That’s weird, has Annie changed pants between strips? In the other strip her pants showed ass and tanga, here it has a patch of leather, although revisiting last strip, she could have changed them mid-air between strips two and three. O_O

  • http://twitter.com/AbhorsenAube Robert Aube

    Very much likey!

  • http://www.facebook.com/thashley Terry L Hashley Jr

    Definitely likey!

  • http://www.facebook.com/aenya.silverleaf Aenya Hiri Silverleaf

Oh yes sir, very much likey!

  • Hamstadini

That’s not leather. That’s her ass. It’s darker because Jaime shaded it like that. I’d explain more, but it’s 2 in the morning.

  • Tony M

Likey! Likey enough that I’m tempted to ask if I can buy a print…

  • Phil C.

Likey very much, but can’t imagine that it would be time effective for you to color every YP strip. I’m quite fond of the B/W as is, but the color is a nice bonus for this one. :)

    cheers,
    Phil

  • mgspeed

Absolutely LIKEY, LIKEY the color! That said I treasure your regular updates even more! Stick with the black and white until the time when you ditch all your other duties and just do YP.

  • Jonathan Lichtblau

a friend of mine intruduced me to ‘girls with slingshots’ some two weeks ago, and once i saw your guest strip there i was hooked, since the colour work on it was utterly beautiful. i then read YP over-night (just couldn’t stop), and although i was a bit disappointed not to see any coloured strips there it’s impossible not to notice your amazing skill at this, seeing as your B&W work has unique qualities, and some of them would be lost in colour, to my opinion a shame..
    anyhow, keep on rocking!

  • Sanguich

WOW. After all that B&W, which was great, I’d never have guessed you were THIS GOOD at color. I hope we see it again, if only occasionally.

  • Jeremy Dwiggins

Likey. :D Or more accurately, *also* likey.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Holy crap! Note to self, color strips get ALL THE COMMENTS!

Thanks for the opinions everyone. I think I like the idea of throwing in a color one every now and again. Maybe do something like I’ve seen in manga where the first few pages of a new chapter are in color, although for YP, maybe the last few pages would seem more appropriate. I’m also flattered at the amount of love for the black and white stuff. I must be doing something right.

  • Jason Clark

Likey so very good! (er, or something)

Your B&W art is great, and I’ll always take frequency of updates over color, but wow, I love the color, and I think it adds a lot to the expressiveness of the characters. I was a big fan of your colored art in book one of Erfworld as well.

And since I’m commenting – Thanks for a great comic. Your writing is the equal of your outstanding art.

  • EntropyBot

Heh, really dig your color stuff, have since Erfworld. Which is funny since I didn’t realize it was also yours until a few months after I started reading this. Keep up the good work, man!

  • Tony

There is NO WAY you are ever going to top that coloring job… yep, it’s all down hill from here. I was blown away by that picture. I didn’t think you had it in you to do something like that. You should be putting on a “not sure if srs” face back at yourself for doing this strip. Seriously seriously awesome!

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

    GAAAH!!! NO MOAR COMIX EVAR!!!!!!!!

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

That could be a really good way to do things.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Thank you. The bonus idea I think could work. Or maybe do some like Lance posters as chapter markers or something like that.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

True that. Color is affordable if you print bajillions and bajillions of books, but for small to medium runs, it’s freaking killer.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

    thank you!

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Thank yous thank yous thank yous

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Oh, thank you. I used to do nothing but color so it’s nice to know that I haven’t lost it.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Yeah, I gotta learn to color faster. I’m kind of a slow poke.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

It’s weird, if I do the lineart like I normally do, there is a plugin that flats the page really easily. But when I just use a ballpoint for lineart like I did here, I’ve got to hand flat the bastard and I was always slow at that shit.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Thank you, and welcome to the comments!

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

I will see what I can do.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Yeah, it’s a trick of the light. That’s definitely her bare ass hanging out.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

    Thanks!

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

    Super thanks!

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

    Thank you.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Really? Would anyone else want something like this? I could maybe do a limited run. With the dialog and everything?

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Yeah, the time thing is a concern. Although, the more I color, the faster I get. I gotta remember all my shortcuts and shit like that from my colorist days.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

I’m so flattered to know so many people enjoy the black and white stuff.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Thanks for doing the archive dive. I’m pretty dumb when it comes to guest comics. I always try to do them in color in a slightly different style which is pretty dumb because when people click over to my comic, it’s all black and white and strip format. But I enjoy challenging myself.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Oh, thanks! I used to be a colorist by profession so I’ve had a lot of practice.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

    Thanks :)

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Oh, thanks. I find myself spending much more time on the writing than the actual drawing so it’s nice to hear that it’s working.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Yup, I did the art for Book 1. Xin is the current artist and I absolutely love what she’s done with the characters.

  • Kyle Wright

It’s not because it’s in color that you get all the comments. It’s because you made a big change. Remember how many comments the typed letters got? That wasn’t even as drastic of a change as this. We all just have to share our opinions on said change.

  • Kyle Wright

    Sold

  • http://www.facebook.com/ +bird+

LIKEY. Though you totally threw by saying just kidding! I thought “hey, this guest comic has a surprisingly similar style!” Glad you had a good time. ^-^

  • toag

those assless chaps look good in color (how could they look bad?)

  • JackTheObserverDee

Very likey. One only needs to look at your resume to see that you are a tremendous colorist. Obviously it’s a hell of a lot of work and no one wants to see you burn yourself out (this comic is far too awesome to let you do that), but every once in a while? Yeah, it fucking owns.

Also, I’m a sucker for a redhead. Even more so for a redhead in chaps. Yum.

  • Nathan Worden

i think this is so slick and professional looking, and i would be very happy to see on occasion some full color panels (of course now you have opened pandora’s box and everyone will want to see more)

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

hahah! I didn’t want to troll you guys too hard by not fessing up.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

    yessir!

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

    Thank you kindly.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Hmm… maybe I could do a thing where people suggests panels to get the color treatment. I could maybe put together a sketchbook type thing? Maybe? Like a 24 page thingy?

  • SmilingAhab

Want some webcomic with yer cheesecake? :p
The colors are really clean and the blend between shadows and highlights and the lighting direction is very consistent. Slick.

    Long live butt-less chaps!

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

    indeeeeed!

  • EntropyBot

CSB time I guess: your expressions are great and I kept trying to figure out where I’d seen them before. Must have gone through my webcomic list twice trying to figure it out. Until finding the wiki entry.

  • Mike

    BW is beter (IMHO)

  • A Finn

Likey! As in “I’d like to pay you to do more of that”. I liked your art in Erfworld book 1 enough to pay for it, too.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

    Ah, thanks.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

    Hurray!

  • DanielCopeland

    Well, you’re no Liefeld…

That being a good thing, of course. Your line art is already great, but your coloring is amazing.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Man, I wish I got paid like him.

  • DanielCopeland

Don’t we all. His success is one of the things that makes me sure there’s no such thing as a loving god.

  • Kyle Wright

RIGHT?! I still want an ending to that!

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

LOL! You guys remember that shit?! I actually had an ending to it, but it was going to take a long ass time.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pierski Steven Napierski

Okay, now it all makes sense.

  • http://ypcomic.com Jamie Noguchi

Oh right, you actually got to see me draw this!

  • JohnNichols

I like this, but I feel as though it would work best only once in a while.
