Reader Laurie Lachapelle pointed me to this tweet by George Takei decrying the casting of the live action Steve movie. You know, that movie that Hollywood is trying to convince us is an adaption of Akira. Takei sent out a link to the Racebending petition and did an interview with The Advocate to expand on his thoughts about the white washing of the film and the plight of Asian American actors in general.

He then sent out a follow-up tweet encouraging supporters to re-tweet at WB to do the right thing.

RT: Hey @! I’m with @ and @! Leave the white guys out of it and keep Akira Asian!

Now we saw a huge number of fans call out the live action Airbender flick for its white washed cast. Our concerns fell on deaf ears. The film bombed and was universally panned by critics.

With the dismal performance of Airbender in mind, perhaps WB will actually listen when fans call for a change in casting. Although honestly, if the leaked script for the film is the real deal, I’m not sure I want Asian Americans involved. It really sounds terrible.

I checked my old haunt cracked.com thinking it was a joke. Apparently it’s not. Wow, these people need to be fired and fired again. Hahaha this is why I can’t stand movies.

    KANEDA
This isn’t you… Whatever is happening to you… You have the strength to stop it.
    TETSUO
Do I? How would you know?
    KANEDA
Because you’ve always had it. You just never knew…
Kaneda struggles with a confession –
    KANEDA
Because I never let you. Let me help you now.
    TETSUO
Help me now? I don’t need your help. I haven’t for a long time.
    KANEDA
What are you talking about, Tetsuo? I’ve done everything for you. Like I promised.
    TETSUO
Right. The promise. You’re a criminal. A thug. A gang leader. You’re everything except what I needed most… A brother!

    SHUT UP SHUT UP

I think the thing that concerns me most about the Akira movie is not the whitewashing, but the terrible liberties taken with the plot.

The original stands (along with the excellent manga) as a testament to masterful storytelling and compelling vision. And unlike Last Airbender, which is a markedly Asian themed work, Akira is a rather generic futuristic setting that doesn’t necessarily have to be Japan (though blowing up Tokyo is always a blast…). The movie could be set anywhere without changing the themes and characters that make the movie so gripping. But they have to change just about everything to make it “appeal to American audiences”, as if the only market that exists in this country is adrenaline fueled 15 year old males. Hollywood can’t seem to make anything original, only tarnishing the glorious ideas of the past. Everything is a movie remake, a sequel, movies of television shows… and it doesn’t look like it will get better soon. And even worse is trying to hedge your bets on a remake of a film already considered a masterpiece. Not a smart move.
