Bacon O Clock

By my clock, it’s always Bacon O Clock!

The term “breaky” that Lance uses is not of the Achy Breaky variety but refers instead to breakfast. It’s a term me and my brother picked up after watching Yellow Submarine for the bajillionth time. It’s only said once in the entire damn movie, but it’s the one quote we both kinda picked up and used in our everyday. Never caught on with anyone else. Ah well.

I apologize for the art in today’s strip. You have the misfortune of witnessing an artist develop something right in front of your face which is as horrifying as it sounds. I had a lot of fun with the pencil shading of Bodie’s flashback and wanted to try to see if I could incorporate some spot blacks and ink washes as part of the regular style. Which leads to this mess. Hmmm…

Fortunately, this is the only scene that takes place in Kane’s bedroom this time around so I knew I had at least one strip to play with. If I liked the results, I could stick with it for the rest of this storyline. If not, I had an easy out. I’m gonna take that out. There are some things about this style that I don’t hate all the way. I like the way the ink washes turned out which I will probably used to enhance the pencil rendering which I think I’ll start using from now on. But I’m not convinced I know what I’m doing with the spot blacks. I can either do the really contrasty chiaroscuro style, or the really clean lines. The in-between comic book rendering with spot blacks and back lighting is something I’m going to have to work on elsewhere and not subject you poor readers to these visual assaults.

So, yet again a new style on Friday, but it should be less harsh of a transition.

Actually, I kinda like how the art fit into this comic, especially panel 4. Maybe it’s just me, but it reminds me of the blurry, screwed up vision you get when you’re just waking up. Not to say I’d necessarily like to see the style done in all future comics, but in this case, I think it fits.

Ever been to Australia? They shorten everything like that. Not breakfast its breaky (even printed on juice bottles!), sunglasses are sunnies, rash guards are rashys, etc.

    What’s a rash guard?

  • Maystro

Hehehe, umm, rash vest? Kinda like a wet suit, but just the top. Damn, we have some strange words. Its almost like we’re speaking another bloody language.

In the UK we’d spell it “brekky”; not to be outdone by the ozzies, here’s a cereal called Ready Brek.

Experiment away! No matter what happens, I’m getting my money’s worth.

I like what you did with the comic. I really think that the constant changes of style and pace in the way you present everything are doing you good. Both as an artist, because it helps you grow, but it also makes the comic unique. Every strip is both a good read because of the content, but also some nice eye-candy since there are subtle differences or experiments in most of them. I for one enjoy the fact that there is no solid style associated with it just yet. It keeps things fresh!

It’s like the hangover has made his eyeballs see HARSH REALITY oooOOoooOOOoo….

I dig the hell out of the dreaming/eyelid cam in the first panel.

I love how I used to close my eyelids so I could see weird images in through them, which kinda looks like what you drew!
Is it me or did Lance’s features rounded up for this strip, is there a meaning to that?

  • Mehmi

yes, we do say breaky (<< aussie ;D) its even on the Hungry Jacks (Aussie Burger King) breakfast ads. and yeah, there is Breaky (brekky?) Juice.
And yes, we shorten almost everything with a y. except for names, for some reason johnny sounds much to american, unlike Jono :P
vegies… barbie(BBQ), if its more than 2 syllables, you can guarantee we have a shorter version :3
