Zidane

As they say, if you have to explain a joke, it probably isn’t funny. But I feel that the sound effect in the last panel deserves a few words. “ZIDANE” refers to retired French footballer Zinedine Zidane who, during the FIFA 2006 World Cup final against Italy, headbutted Italian footballer Marco Materazzi late in the match. Materazzi was saying some shit to Zidane and I guess he just had enough and decided to open a case of headbutt on his ass.

It was such a powerful hit he knocked Materazzi right on his ass. So every time I see a headbutt in an action flick, the sound effect “ZIDANE” echoes in my mind.

Oh, and this ends our first arc, Case of the Mondays! Oi, a month and a half for one day. I don’t really have a set schedule for these arcs in terms of how long they’ll run or if they’ll correspond to a full day. So we’ll just play things by ear.

I always giggle when artists use the sound effect of “tak tak” for typing, because “tak” means “yes” in my language. I always have the mental image of the keyboard moaning “YES! YES! More!” …I dared a few webcomic artists I stalk to draw an orgasmic keyboard, but somehow noone ever picked it up. I wonder why ^_^;?…

So I gather that Kane is a freelance artist who only gets paid when he’s, well, making art? Damn. Theoretically that company could just shuffle him from meeting to meeting while milking him for ideas, starting him on projects without ever actually letting him finish them (and using another freelancer to finish them so that neither gets credit), etc.; and never having to actually *pay* him. (Yeah, I *do* think that the American corporate hive mind is an Evil, greedy, twisted thing out to deprive workers of their hard-earned paychecks any way they can. I watch the news too, y’know…) [/rant]

    ZIDANE!! :D

The Zidane thing was easy to work out from context. The “no billable hours” thing is… confusing?

On contemplation, I’m going to guess you don’t get paid for meetings or something. Only explanation I can come up with. How peculiar. How would they be able to tell? Why come to work at all? How very odd.

I think it depends on the company. The one I worked for didn’t consider internal meetings to count towards billable hours so we were always kinda screwed.

I fell out of my chair at the Zidane sound effect. I just found this comic (the interweb is a big and scary place after all) but the Zizzou reference just made it one of my favorites.
