White on Rice and Children of Invention are two awesome independent Asian American films that have created a lot of buzz in the festival circuit. And I think fans of YP will get a kick out of them. The filmmakers have teamed up for a joint premier in NYC next weekend and to celebrate, they’re running a free DVD giveaway contest for the next eight days. Each day, a trivia question will be posted either about White on Rice or Children of Invention. The first person to email the correct answer will win the DVD of the film in question. There will be four questions per movie each. Of course, if you’re in NYC you can just stop by the premier next weekend. For the rest of us, get your thinking caps on and hit up the contest!

And here are the trailers for both films. I hope they get a wider release someday so I can see them here in DC.

The comic is gorgeous and funny as per usual, Jamie. I’m REALLY lovin’ Kane.

Those movies really are entitled to a much wider release than they will probably be afforded, which is really unfortunate. Regardless, I will definitely be keeping tabs on them. After I watched the trailers I really thought about mainstream American cinema and its depiction of Asians and I was (for some reason) really surprised to find that it is often far from favorable. I know I sound like Cpt. Obvious here, but where certain minority groups are finally starting to receive (somewhat) natural roles, it seems like Asians are still either highly stereotyped or…no, yeah that’s about it. It’s just really nice to see something that isn’t so forced, like “Hai u guyze! Look, these people are unrealistically different from us but it’s ok cuz they’re just like u and me!” It’s just, “Hey, look. People. They may have a slightly different cultural background than your average Joe, but they deal with the same shit as everybody.” As a white kid who grew up in a highly multicultural neighborhood, I can say these films just feel genuine. They have heart, they have soul, and soon…they shall have my money. (sorry for the wall of text)

Ah, thank you for the compliment jeffuro san!

I’d really like to know how movies are chosen for distribution. WOR and COI are waaaaay better than drek like Meet the Spartans, yet that stupid fucking movie was everywhere and these two indy flicks can’t get a decent release. Grrrrrr… so annoying.
